The Freddie Awards, is the "oldest and most prominent" recognition award for frequent traveler reward programs.  The Freddie Awards were created in 1988 by Randy Petersen who was the editor and publisher of InsideFlyer magazine.  The Freddie Awards were touted as the frequent travelers’ answer to the Oscar, Emmy and Grammy.  Randy named the awards for Sir Freddie Laker in honor of Sir Laker’s pioneering marketing efforts.  In the late 1970’s and early 1980’s Sir Freddie made travel something that was marketed.  At the first Freddie Awards in 1988, the awards were compiled from over 1,000 responses from readers of the InsideFlyer magazine as well as input from the editorial staff.  At the time, InsideFlyer readers were a unique mixture of the top frequent flyers as well as those new to the programs seeking suggestions and help in maximizing their travel decisions.

Today, Freddie Award-winning frequent travel programs are the gold standard against which all others are judged, much like Sir Freddie.  While still alive, Sir Freddie reflected upon the awards saying, “seeing my name on the Freddie Awards gives me a great thrill. This whole business excites me so much, I can’t believe Randy thought to name them after me.”  Though Sir Freddie Laker passed away in 2006, his name and his spirit continues to inspire those in the travel industry. – Adapted from Freddie Awards

This is not an elitist view of these programs but rather the “best” are determined by the votes of those who spend a great deal of their life on the road.
