“For a long time, Siddhartha had lived the life of the world and of lust, though, without being a part of it.  His senses, which he had killed off in hot years as a Samana, had awoken again, he had tasted riches, had tasted lust, had tasted power; nevertheless he had still remained in his heart for a long time a Samana…  Years passed by; surrounded by the good life, Siddhartha hardly felt them fading away. He had become rich, for quite a while he possessed a house of his own and his own servants, and a garden before the city by the river.” - Siddhartha

Siddhartha has mastered almost everything he attempted.  He was a model son of the Brahmins, a skilled ascetic among the Samanas, and a fierce businessman and lover.  However, perfection left little room for variety and Siddhartha’s moderate living, joy of thinking, and meditation practice, all begun to gather dust.  He lived in a cycle of predictable events, he had become a slave to the very thing he had mastered.  A potter's wheel set in motion will keep on turning for a long time, but it does slowly lose its stamina and come to a stop.  Similarly, Siddhartha's soul had kept turning the wheels of asceticism, reflection, and differentiation for a long time, but it turned slowly now and was close to a standstill.

Journey far,

“Instead of possibilities, I have realities in my past, not only the reality of work done and of love loved, but of sufferings bravely suffered. These sufferings are even the things of which I am most proud, although these are things which cannot inspire envy.” -  Viktor Frankl
