Starting Something New

“As the Englishman stared out at the desert, his eyes seemed brighter than they had when he was reading his books.  ‘This is the first phase of the job,’ he said.  ‘I have to separate out the sulfur.  To do that successfully, I must have no fear of failure.  It was my fear of failure that first kept me from attempting the Master Work.  Now, I'm beginning what I could have started ten years ago.  But I'm happy at least that I didn't wait twenty years.’” - Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist

There are a lot of emotions just before starting something new; hesitation, fear, avoidance, doubt, and worry all come to mind.  With so many reasons to just “stay at home” why would I ever venture out?  The answer lies not at the moment of beginning; but at the moment after the initial jump.  In The Alchemist, “his eyes seemed brighter than they had when he was reading his books.”  After eight months of expansive pursuit of tips and tricks for more efficient living, I had compiled an impressive notebook.  The moment has arrived to put aside the reading, and to “separate the sulfur.”  I’m beginning what I could have started 8 months ago.  But I’m happy at least I didn't wait twenty years.
