There’s Got To Be A Better Way

“A hundred and fifty years ago, Henry David Thoreau left Concord, Massachusetts, because he believed it had become too noisy, too distracting, and too busy.  He went off to Walden Pond to reconnect with himself and with nature.  It took him only seven pages in his writings and reflections to conclude, ‘Most men lead lives of quiet desperation.’” – Matthew Kelly, The Rhythm of Life

The summer following my freshman year in college, I found myself wrestling with philosophical questions.  Working as the director of an archery range at a summer camp, externally I excelled.  However, I found myself with enough internal discontinuity that joy had escaped me.  I had stumbled into a life of quiet desperation.  My older brother had given me a book by Australian-born author, Matthew Kelly, called The Rhythm of Life.  Perhaps largely attributed to a “season of life”, the book spoke to me.  I spent every free moment at the archery range devouring pages and taking notes on recycled printer paper.  By the time I finished the book, I was convinced I had discovered life’s best kept secret.  The quest to become the best-version-of-myself could be broken down into actionable pieces.  This new knowledge transformed into a spring of joy.
