Three Credit Card Values
Jerry was finally ready to check off the item on his to-do list he had been putting off. Jerry sat down at his computer in order to find the perfect credit card. He was tired of being reminded every time he went to Target to buy a pack of toilet paper. For the past year, Jerry had continually procrastinated his note that read “get new credit card.” Jerry had gotten his credit card back in college because it seemed like a pretty good deal. Every time Jerry went to the grocery store or pumped gas he got 1 point for every dollar he spent. Over the years Jerry had redeemed his points for some cool stuff. One Christmas he got a $200 Visa gift card and bought presents for his family.
But last week, Jerry was over at a friend’s house watching the game when a Citi Bank commercial came on the TV. The commercial talked about a credit card called the Citi Double Cash that gave 1 point for every dollar spent and another point for every dollar that was paid back. Jerry blurted out, “man, that card is twice as good as the one I have!” Jerry’s friend Rick smiled and said, “there are lots of good credit cards out there for people who pay their balances in full every month.” Jerry asked Rick, “so is there a better one?” Rick responded, “well it depends. There are three different kinds of value from credit cards. There are credit cards that come with great signup bonuses, ones with great benefits, and ones that reward you for well ongoing spending.” It wasn’t the answer Jerry was hoping for, but the game was back on so he would have to do some research later.
