“Dave taught me a lot about living a good story.  He taught me that progress, no matter how slow, is all that matters.  On our first day, we sat on the exercise bike and pedaled slowly for twenty minutes.  If I pedaled too hard, he told me to slow down.  And after twenty minutes he told me I was done and could go home.  I asked him if he was serious, and he said he was.  He said that twenty minutes of mild exercise should be considered a workout, and if I worked out five days a week, I should be completely satisfied.  ‘You should never feel guilty for not doing anything beyond twenty minutes of mild exercise,’ he said.  ‘Everything else is icing on the cake.’

Then he said, ‘Tomorrow we put the icing on the cake.’

The next day, he worked me out so hard I had to go into the alley behind the gym to throw up.  ‘Remember,’ he said while I was dry-heaving against the wall, ‘this is all icing on the cake.  Twenty minutes of light exercise is all it takes.’ I wiped my mouth and looked at him for compassion.  He went back inside and came out with a medicine ball.  He threw it at me.  I rolled it back to him.” – Donald Miller, A Million Miles In A Thousand Years
